VenusDiSirius | I put it simply, because it is the other way around - the mythology is reflecting Greek mentality and social structures, not astrology. Stargazing came later. |
7thGuardian | ...it shares some common grounds, since astronomy is very old and astrology has some roots in it... - the given name for the planets was based on Greek and roman mythology - but even the Greeks used even older myths from ancient cultures as inspiration. In roman mythology - they were all Gods and believed to influence the life of humans (and beyond)... and now, with "modern astrology" - those Gods are acknowledged as Planets "but we (those that understand and believe in astrology) do share the same believes". |
Belage | Like VenusDiSirius, I think it's the other way around. Myths (not just Greek mythology) are as old as mankind. Western astrology uses western myths to understand reality and to extract the past, the present and the future. |

7thGuardian | The documentation on this subject states otherwise: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_astrology#Early_origins - the Greeks improved it - but both astronomy and astrology (more primitive forms) were around way way back before Ancient Greece... and it kept improving and evolving ever since. Modern astrology is the result of at least 5000 years of evolution - wile some would dare to go as far as 27.000 if we take in consideration the most primitive forms... |
RunAroundScreaming | ^ exactly. I've always read that astrology first started with the babylonians (mesopotamia) (who existed before the greeks) and that it is not even certain if it even started with them I have read that evidence for astrology has even been found in egyptian pyramids ("The Case for Astrology" - John Anthony West). It is known that even before the egyptians in the megalithic age, they would position stones in accordance with the stars but there is no direct correlation to astrology. It's possible, though. It can't just be coincidence, and astrology is way too accurate to be formulated on myths that are not even real. I think it must've been the other way around. It makes more sense that Astrology came first, then the greeks made folktales based on the planets and how they controlled the earth (aka gods) ------------------ $3.50 ebay compatibility readings | testimonials | Past readings |
VenusDiSirius | ^ Ignoratio elenchi. + They were aware that planets or spheres exist, however they attribute their movement to creation of music. |
Belage | Myths came before astrology. Of that I am certain. The Babylonians had a rudiment of astrology, and even their astrology came from their myths. If you look at the last 200+ years, when new planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Chiron, etc) were discovered, the names assigned to them were taken from Greek mythology. That's always the way it's done. Astrologers do NOT create a new name and a new myth for a planet. They use the available names and myths from the collective cultural and spiritual psyche. |
RunAroundScreaming | Interesting, Belage...hmm I'll have to look into that. Thank you

RunAroundScreaming | history channel documentary...wish it said something about astrology, but its weird that the sumerians (city next to babylon) who were the first to ever show the zodiac signs in western astro as we know them today said they were slaves to alien beings WTF. And then i saw all this ish about the human genome and how recent scientific research shows that it is very unlikely that we evolved from primates because primates have 48 chromosomes and humams have 46 and science shows that our mitochondratic code was transformed by an extra long code...like it had been mutated somehow. I dunno its firetrucking weird. WTF SCIENTOLOGY. LOL. Ok im gonna go to sleep now. this is too funny. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29HCv_8kNM4 ------------------ $3.50 ebay compatibility readings | testimonials | Past readings |
Gray | No. A lot of asteroids and planets and things were named after Greek and Roman mythological characters, though. |
Venus | the interesting part is that every greek god represents the characteristic of ruling planet's sign. for example, mars (the god) is a typical Aries, hermes is the perfect gemini, etc.. |
amowls** | Opposite. Astrology is based off of Greek Mythology. The History Channel shows a lot of "documentaries" that are actually all bullsh*t because it gives them ratings. They don't even pretend to be super informative anymore. Venus, Hermes is the same as Mercury, it's the Greek name for the same god (Mercury is the Roman name). Too bad there are no planets named Minerva (Athena) and Diana (Artemis), thoses are my favorite goddesses. All we have is Venus (Aphrodite). |

Correction: Western astrology is based on Greek mythology - or should i say "Greek astrology" - as was stated in some of above articles - the Greeks improved astrology and included their myths in it (a touch of their own) - but was around long before the Greeks. |
RunAroundScreaming | i havent seen any proof/links/sources that say that astrology was based on mythology and not the other way around..could someone post something so i can understand & know for sure? thanks ------------------ $3.50 ebay compatibility readings | testimonials | Past readings |
